More Graduation Day Advice

This week on the podcast, we discussed What We Wish We Knew on Law School Graduation Day.  Something else we did not fully appreciate when graduation time came was just how vital networking is to a successful long-term career. As law students, we found the idea of networking to be intimidating.  We would receive invitations to networking events and we wondered what do you even do at a networking event? Who do you talk to? What do you say?

We now realize that networking felt so intimidating because we didn't have the right mindset. Because we were intimidated we did not have a plan and did not look at networking strategically.  Over the course of our careers networking has become second-nature to both of us in our practices. We have started, nurtured, and grown professional networking relationships with fellow attorneys as well as CPAs, financial advisors, and insurance professionals. Through the power of networking, we have grown as attorneys and flourished in our practices.

In fact, we founded Lawyers Who Launch to help lawyers and law students develop mutually beneficial professional relationships to find more joy and satisfaction in their careers.

If networking makes you feel awkward or uncomfortable, if you don’t have a plan for networking, we invite you to invest in yourself this summer with The Law Student’s Guide to Networking. Don’t underestimate how the power of networking can start and grow your legal career.

Please keep in mind that your jurisdiction will have rules of professional conduct that you must follow. This discussion does not focus on the any such rules, including the rules from the jurisdiction where we practice. Rather this is a discussion of tips we have found helpful in managing client expectations in our own experiences. This should not be taken as legal advice.

We make absolutely no guarantee, expressed or implied, that by following the advice you will make any money or improve current profit, as there are several factors and variables that come into play regarding any given business or career. Primarily, results will depend on the business model, the conditions of the marketplace, the experience of the individual, and situations and elements that are beyond your control. As with any business endeavor, you assume all risk related to investment and money based on your own discretion and at your own potential expense.
