Time v. money - home edition

Hi All,

In this episode we discuss making decisions about things in our home based on time v. money. In other words, how to make the decision between something that you want to take the time to do or delegate to some other source at a cost.

Grocery delivery is something that is widely available and can be a real time saver, at a cost. Although, Amy considers whether it saves her money in the long run because she is not a victim to impulse buys. Either way, not having to make the time to go to the store and do the shopping herself is well worth the cost for her.

Still talking about food, we considered meal delivery - ordering pre-made food from a local chef and having it delivered to your home - and meal kits - like Home Fresh and Blue Apron. Both of these cost a bit more than what you could do entirely on your own, but they offer a great benefit too. Not having to do the shopping at all can save you a lot of time each week. We also have found that we have been exposed to new and different things that we never would have attempted on our own.

We then moved on from food to talk about home maintenance. Amy incorporates lawn maintenance in her family budget because that is a priority for her family to allow more time for other things. For some reason, still not entirely understood by Haley, her husband loves all things lawn related and is adamant that this is something that he really wants to do himself. Although it would most certainly take a professional less time to do, and free him up for something else, this is important to him. Rather than developing a financial lawn care budget, in Haley’s family, they budget the time for these chores.

Conversely, Haley has previously budgeted for in home cleaning. While Amy, find that idea interesting, she ultimately has decided that it is not for her at this time.

We then talked about more “fun” decisions like fashion and style. We have both tried a variety of styling boxes and services. We break down StitchFix and Rent the Runway and how we have used them at different points in our lives.

Travel definitely brings up choices about time v. money. Amy reviewed different features that her family has budgeted for and utilized on their Disney vacations. Disney is notorious for their upgrade offerings and Amy as taken advantage of many, to the enjoyment of her and her family. Haley discussed this on a more local level - renting a house at the shore and the balance between cost and proximity to beach access.

In line with our mission to help you find more joy and fulfillment, we also gave you some guidelines to help you make your next home time v. money decision.

  1. Is the cost reasonable?

  2. What is my motivation? Is this something I want to do or is this something I feel I should do?

  3. Is there a downside to trying it out? Are you committed to a certain period of time or can you try it once see if it is worth the cost?
