Amy’s LLM Journey

Hi All,

In this episode Haley interviews Amy about her LLM journey. Amy shares her pre-program decision making process, her struggles during her course of study, and what she has learned along the way. While Amy is about to earn her LLM in taxation, this episode is not just for Tax Attorneys. Amy’s journey can offer you some concrete ways to think about a big idea you may have about going back to earn another degree or certification in your profession.

Getting an LLM in taxation is something that was always in the back of Amy’s mind as she worked in an estate planning firm with a tax focus. Finally, after seven years in practice, she felt ready to investigate. She was hesitate to go back to school, but wanted to learn more - what’s the harm in applying?

Well, she got in, and then she had a decision to make. Ultimately Amy knew that this degree was going to help her take her practice to the next level and the work to get there was something she was prepared to undertake. She committed to a program that would work best with her current season of life and go started.

Now, just two credits shy of her degree, all of her hard work is about to pay off. For Amy, it is not just about the additional piece of paper, but the work along the way that she will be able to enhance her practice to the benefit of her clients.

Are you thinking about going back to school? Are you apprehensive to invest the time and money it will take? Here are some points to think about to help you make the decision that is best for you:

  1. Investigation. Look to see what is available in your practice area, where those programs are offered, and how they are offered by various institutions. A great resource is a mentor or colleague who has gone through the same type of program to discuss the process and its ultimate impact on their practice.

  2. Don’t let geography get in your way. So many programs now offer online options and your proximity to an institutional frequently is irrelevant.

  3. Take some time with your calendar. Look at your schedule now and plan out when you will be able to attend class, complete coursework, and study for exams. This exercise will tell you a lot about how well your life can practically fit into a program. But keep in mind that it would be a temporary change, so you can evaluate how temporary shifts in your schedule might work for you.
