Building Your Network

Hi All,

In this episode we are continuing our conversation about networking and specifically focusing on tips for how to build your network with reciprocal relationships.

Finding attorneys that you can network with in a practice area that is different than your specialty, but has client needs that might cause the need for back and forth referrals. Think about your practice area. What other types of attorney services might your ideal client have? Do you know anyone that you could recommend your clients to to fit that need? If not, think about how you might meet those types of attorneys - perhaps a bar association event or a continuing legal education seminar.

Your network can always go beyond attorneys as well. There are many professionals with adjacent and complementary skills that can bring value to your practice, as you bring value to their business.

Amy talked about her experience with networking groups and the valuable professionals she was able to add to her networking through these groups. Haley talked about a less obvious networking source - Peloton Law Moms - and how that group has become a key part of her network. While Amy’s group is local and specifically focused on networking, Haley’s group brings together women nationwide - even if they are not singularly focused on networking and building practices.

We also discussed the referral-for-referral expectation when networking. But if networking is about building relationships, then referral-for-referral is more transactional. It also becomes complicated when you attempt to assess the “value” of a referral you give compared to one you may receive. These comparisons do not build strong networking relationships, and are probably best avoided. You will be better served focusing on quality relationships rather than counting referrals and fees.

We would love to hear from your on your thoughts on networking or whether you have any questions for us. You can email us at info@lawyerswholaunch.com or reach out to us on Instagram @lawyerswholaunch.

Thank you!
