Not Everything Requires Going the extra mile

“Being asked to do Z isn’t a good enough reason to do Y.”

-Greg McKeown

Hi All,

This week’s podcast is being infused with a little bit of “Effortless.” This is not just a concept, but the book by Greg McKeown. Haley first read this book on the recommendation of The She Interviews. After sending Amy many frantic messages about the book, Amy read it as well. This book meant a lot to both of us and instead of talking about it has a whole, we decided to bring you pieces that spoke to us specifically.

The first part of this is “being ask to do Z isn’t a good enough reason to do Y.” As McKeown says - not everything needs the extra mile. Logically we all know that this overachiever mindset leads to frustration and burnout. Practically, this is much more difficult.

However, McKeown broke this down for us in a way that helps us process when something does NOT need the extra mile. It really got us thinking about being intentional with our tasks and understanding what actually needs to be done.

As lawyers we could slave over every detail and every possibility. But it that really what the tasks requires? Is that the best way to serve our clients? These are questions you can ask yourself before you go overboard. Some things do require the extra mile - but NOT everything.

Law students can get a jump this from the start but applying this to law school. The more practiced you can become at evaluating what a task actually needs the better you will become at this effort. There are so many resources out there to help you through law school - you DO NOT need to figure these things out on your own. There are people who have been there and done that and can help you! Right now!

We would love to hear how you apply this to your practice, studying, and life! Let us know!

Have a great day!

Haley & Amy
