Stop “Shoulding” All Over Yourself

Hi All,

This week on the podcast we want you to stop “shoulding” all over yourself!

Being a lawyer takes a certain amount of drive and ambition. Law school overtly and intentionally pits student versus student and those comparisons are very well known. This environment makes it very easy to consider all of the things you think you “should” be doing - but all of these “shoulds” make it easy for you to lose sight of yourself in the process.

But how do you stop “shoulding” all over yourself? Start with a simple “why.” Why do I think I should be doing this? This initial why will help you identify whether you think you should do something because of some outside force or whether it serves you and your values and interests.

For example - if the answer to your “why” question is “because that is what other people do,” dig deeper. Sometimes the answer to your “why” question will help you recognize that the thing you think you “should” do actually is the right fit. You are able to then go into it knowing that it is right for you. But this “why” will also help you weed out things that are not right for you. These are precisely the “shoulds” we are referring to.

We highly recommend going back to Episode 6 - Mission Statements, if you have no yet developed a mission statement. Having a mission statement can help you navigate the “shoulds” that inevitably pop up by having a deeper understanding of your core values and goals.

We would love to hear from you on how you keep from “shoulding” all over yourself! You can reach us via email info@lawyerswholaunch.com or on Instagram @lawyerswholaunch.

Have a great day!
